Europa Sotto i Monti Asterousia

Piero Meogrossi uses a double-headed axe in his exploration of the imagery of archeology. The double-bitted Labrys, the symmetrical double-bladed axe that divides and unites time and space, that separates and binds the wisdom buried beneath the rubble and reawakened by the mere call of the mind.

Upsetting the sceptics and the incredulous, Meogrossi is our host at the banquet of his dream, whose tracery of signs is transformed, inviting us to enter the long-awaited place – Utopia or Heterotopia – which only exists in the mind or in cartography.

And it is right at the start, in the quote from Anaximander used by Meogrossi as an epitaph for the text, that we find all his energy: “Things transform from one state to another according to need, and justice is dealt according to the order of the time”. And hence the axe of justice (the largest examples of which are found in the Aegean island of Crete) has temporarily replaced the pencil to dig, slice and reveal, rather than merely transcribe, the image of the princess Europa from the mountains of Asterousia, mounted on the white bull (Marcello Sèstito).
