Utopie

The utopia Ugo La Pietra presents us with is a winding road from the 1960s to 2015, and includes subjects such as urban nodes, Autoarchiterapia, fabric structuring, interior/exterior, neo-eclecticism and urban green. Beyond the subversive power of the drawings and projects included in this collection, it becomes clear that our “aesthetic operator”, as he likes to call himself, has acted for years in contradiction of accepted norms, bureaucratic mechanisms, institutionalised galleries and exhibitions with a profit motive, creating a parallel world of proposals, incitement and provocation. We are certain that the multitude of projects, objects, proposals, sounds, images and texts produced by La Pietra will remain among the highest testimonies of an unfinished and “radical” season, which will have to be addressed in the years to come. An ongoing bequest by an author capable of filling a Borgesian Library of Babel (which he did recently for his solo show at the Milan Triennale), endless randomly or haphazardly themed boxes, the only true weapon art has that can change the world (Marcello Sèstito).

Ugo La Pietra was born in Bussi sul Tirino (Pescara) in 1938, and is a native of Arpino (Frosinone). He lives and works in Milan, where he graduated from the Polytechnic University in Architecture in 1964.

An architect by training; artist, editor and teacher, since 1960 he has described himself as a researcher into the system of communication and the visual arts, while simultaneously navigating the territories of art and design. A tireless experimenter, he has moved in various currents (from Pittura Segnica to conceptual art, narrative art to auteur cinema) and used a wide range of mediums,conducting studies that materialised in his theory of the “Unbalancing System” – an autonomous expression within Radical Design – and in major sociological themes such as “La casa telematica” (MoMA, New York, 1972 – Fiera di Milano, 1983), “Rapporto tra Spazio reale e Spazio virtuale” (Milan Triennale 1979, 1992), “La casa neoeclettica” (Abitare il Tempo, 1990) and “Cultura Balneare” (Centro Culturale Cattolica, 1985/95). His work was circulated through numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad, and he curated several exhibitions at the Milan Triennale, the Venice Biennale, the Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art, the FRAC Museum in Orléans, the Faenza Museum of Ceramics and the Ragghianti Foundation in Lucca. In his critiques of artworks and objects and his academic, teaching and publishing work, he has always endorsed the humanist, meaningful and local nature of art and design.
